Adult day health care services are expected to see a surge in admissions based on their cost structure.

According to Entrepreneur Magazine, adult day services are one of the Top 10 fastest growing businesses in USA and "still one of the best-kept secrets around".

Adult day care services for the elderly have necessarily become very popular since they were introduced in the 1970s. In fact, the number of elder day care centers has doubled since 1989. If you are a caregiver for an elderly relative or friend who needs help, you may find adult day care as your only choice to properly care for your loved one. Adult day care is relatively low-cost and may be covered by Medicaid, health insurance, or long-term care insurance.

If you are not fortunate enough to be in a financial position to remain home to care for your elderly loved one, Adult day care is essential to being able to keep your income. Adult day care also is a great social resource for allowing the elderly and infirm to enjoy one another's company during the day.

Day care centers are typically open five days a week; some may have extended evening and weekend hours. If the senior in your life needs more care than this, it may be time to consider residential care or 24-hour in-home care

What is adult day care?

Adult day care is a program that includes a variety of health, social and supportive services. A safe, protective, supervised environment is available for your loved ones to enjoy their day with others. These adult day care centers are licensed community-based services.

Unlike nursing homes, they do not provide around the clock professional supervision and care. The programs are specifically for seniors who are mentally, physically, or functional impaired or simply socially isolated.

The programs are structured and designed, usually through a personal care plan, to cover all the daily individual needs of each participant. Healthy meals, taking into account the patient's dietary needs are served. This allows the home caregiver the chance to avoid worrying about preparing cold lunches or worrying that the stove won't be turned off if the elderly person attempts to cook. These elderly persons a safe environment where they are not likely to fall, or if they should become ill someone is there to obtain immediate assistance. Too often we hear of the elderly person falling in their home and laying there in pain until their caregiver comes home from work. These centers remove that worry from the caregiver.

What are the benefits of adult day care?

With adult day services, people with health problems, Alzheimer's disease, chronic illnesses, or physical disabilities are able to continue to live in the community while receiving professional services in a group setting. Involvement in an adult day care program can increase a senior's health, outlook, and chances of remaining in the community. Depression is a problem in the isolated elderly, and the social interaction of these programs can be very important to the quality of the elder's life.

Adult day care provides a safe and caring setting for adults who cannot be left at home alone. At the day care center, they socialize with their peers, participate in outings and activities, and receive support services. Social activities such as games and crafts help the seniors pass the time. Or they can sit and read or watch television if they desire. Adult day health care offers medical services, like rehabilitation, therapy, nursing care, and special nutrition, in addition to social and support activities. These programs typically provide meals, activities, and supervision by professionals. They may also offer transportation to and from the center, social services, case management and family counseling for the caregivers as well.

Adult Day Health Care Program also offers: physical, occupational and speech therapies, nursing supervision, monitoring of vital signs, blood glucose, blood pressure, medications, assistance with bathroom visits, dietary counseling and supervision, psychological counseling, and an Individualized Plan of Care. This plan is periodically reviewed by a team of specialists that include: a physician, a registered nurse, social workers, a Licensed Physical Therapist, a Licensed Occupational Therapist, a physical therapy aide, a dietician, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
